For landlords & property managers

Rent to a Veteran

Fill your unit with a tenant who has a case manager in their corner, and use programs that lower your risk.

Why landlords say yes

Support doesn't stop at move-in

Veterans housed through these programs work with a case manager you can call if something comes up.

Help with money up front

Programs can help with deposits, rent, and other move-in costs for eligible Veterans.

Keep Minnesota at functional zero

Minnesota can only house Veterans quickly if there are enough landlords ready to rent. You're part of how this works.

Programs that back you up

MDVA Homes for Veterans

MDVA's property-management incentive program for landlords who rent to Veterans experiencing homelessness. It includes an Incentive Fund, a Vacancy Relief Fund, and a Risk Mitigation Fund. Eligibility depends on the Veteran's barrier score from the Homeless Veteran Registry, so the funds are aimed at helping Veterans with harder rental histories.

Vacancy Relief has been described as covering up to 45 days of vacancy, starting from the date the unit was available, after you approve an eligible Veteran's application. VERIFY

HUD-VASH vouchers

A rental voucher from the local housing authority, paired with VA case management. The housing authority pays its share of the rent directly to you, and the tenant pays their share. Units must pass a housing authority inspection. VERIFY local housing authority contacts

SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families)

Nonprofits such as MACV can help eligible Veteran families with deposits, rent, and utilities, plus case management. About SSVF

How it works

  1. Tell us about your unit using the form below.
  2. Partner housing staff contact you (MDVA and MACV, once agreements are signed).
  3. You're matched with a Veteran. You screen applicants your usual way, following fair housing law.
  4. Lease and move-in. The case manager helps with program paperwork and funds.
  5. Ongoing support. You have a case manager to call if issues come up.

Common questions

Who pays the rent?

It depends on the program. With HUD-VASH, the housing authority pays part directly to you and the tenant pays the rest. SSVF and other programs may help with deposits or the first months. Your case manager will explain the specific arrangement before you sign.

Do I have to lower my standards?

You use your normal screening process, following fair housing law. Programs like Homes for Veterans exist so you can say yes to Veterans with harder histories while lowering your risk.

What if there's a problem after move-in?

Call the Veteran's case manager. Resolving problems early is part of their job, and it's a big reason these tenancies work.

Does it cost anything to list a unit?

No.
